Nursing Home Quilt and Preemie Blankets

Another Nursing Home Quilt finish and two more Preemie Blankets for the Children's Hospital.
My Quilt Guild asks that each member contribute a minimum of two quilts a year to be used in a nursing home, hospital or disaster relief.  Since I joined the Charity Bee, I have been much better about meeting and exceeding that goal. Sewing with other like-minded quilters is always fun.

Made with Charm Pack of 40 pcs. and cream colored background.

Sew 2 charms together and add a 5" x 9 1/2" of background to make a block.

Charity Quilts

These are the two charity quilts that I made for my Quilt Guild this year.  I made lap quilts for the nursing homes that we adopt each year.  I helped deliver 50 quilts to the memory and assisted living residents of one facility and 100 quilts to assisted living residents in another facility.  We all grab 3 or 4 quilts and walk around the room and allow each person to pick one to keep.  It is like a quilt show for the residents.  If the resident is bed ridden, we go room to room with several quilts to choose from.

This one has golf items on it.  There are more and more men in these facilities.  They like sports, animals, birds and masculine colors sometimes.

I made the center of this quilt from 3 1/2" strips.  I was seeing if I liked the process of the jellyroll quilt before using up one of my precious jellyrolls. 

This quilt was chosen by a man.

I used straight line quilting on this.  I really liked doing the quilting and how it turned out.

Quilts for My Aunts

I attend a family reunion, for my Father's side, each October.   In 2013, I asked each of my three Aunts for their favorite color.  I then made each a quilt and took them to the 2014 reunion as a surprise.

Aunt Frances said she liked mint green.

 

 

Aunt Clara said she liked yellow and some green.

 

 

 

Aunt Elsie said she liked red, she really liked red.

 

 

I cherish my Aunts and think about them more often than they know.  Each time that they wrap their quilts around them, I hope it feels like a warm hug from me.

 

Charity Quilt Finish

The Quilt Guild likes each member to turn in a  minimum of two charity quilts each year.  They use our birthday month as a memory trigger.  This is my second one for 2013.  The binding was not quite finished in 2013.  Now to get started on my two for 2014.

I used blue and brown to make it appealing to the males.  We forget that even though the women out number the men in nursing homes, about 9 to 1, they are there.

This is the back.  My friend, Carol, shared her bolt of fabric with the Bee for QOV or charity quilts. 
I helped pass out quilts at two nursing home and the men sometimes hesitate to pick out a quilt.   When the nurses pointed out the animals or fish or birds, the men became more interested and accepted one of our quilts.

Lap Quilt for Hubby

I made this Lap Quilt for my Sweetie of  37 yrs.  It includes a foot pocket on the back per his request.
It is made from a Layer Cake.  Sliced into 3 1/2" and 6 1/2", sew two different fabrics together and slice down the middle.  This creates two 5"  x  9 1/2" pieces.  Each piece will consist of two different fabrics. Choose two pieces (four different fabrics) and flip one upside down.  Sew together for 9 1/2" blocks.  Below is a link to a tutorial by Missouri Star Quilt Co.

My Sweetie likes roses and always has rose bushes growing in the yard.  So I had it quilted in an open rose pattern by Trish Lopes.
